Labor Day may be the mark of summer’s end for many, but residents of Monmouth and Ocean counties can still embrace the sights, sounds, and tastes of summer, while supporting Make-A-Wish® New Jersey, during the 2012 Beach Ball at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como on Saturday, September 15.
Beach Ball highlights Jersey shore summer staples, with entertainment by the Billy Lawlor Band and a sampling of cuisine from more than two dozen top Jersey Shore restaurants. Proceeds will help fund wishes that will be granted to children from Monmouth and Ocean counties.
“A wish experience has a magical way of unifying people around the powerful mission of bringing hope, strength, and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions,” said Tom Weatherall, president and chief executive officer of Make-A-Wish New Jersey. “Residents of Monmouth and Ocean counties have certainly proven this to be true and just one way they’ve show their support is through their inspiring participation at the Beach Ball year after year.”
“Whether by volunteering in organizing the event or the many restaurants contributing their delicious dishes or the attendees purchasing tickets, each role is important and making it a success each year,” added Mr. Weatherall.
Proceeds from 2011 Beach Ball, totaling more than $25,000, went a long way in helping to fund a portion of the more than 50 wishes granted last year to children residing in Monmouth or Ocean counties, including the wish of then 13-year-old Josh Cramer, who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in June of 2011.
“Josh and our entire family were very touched to have Josh’s wish funded from proceeds from the Beach Ball event,” shared Josh’s mom, Michele Cramer. “We have lived in Jackson for close to 25 years and as a family we have been very active within the community. It was wonderful to have so many people come together and help to make Josh’s wish a reality.”
Make-A-Wish New Jersey granted Josh’s wish to go to Bora Bora in November of 2011.
“Josh was thrilled to be able to choose what he wanted to do,” said Michele. “For our family as a whole it was really a time to regroup and catch our breath and enjoy our time together. We had been running to treatments, doctor’s appointments and researching additional treatments. We were all running on empty. We also knew it would likely be the last time we would all vacation together.”
Josh passed away on May 29, 2012, just eight days after his 14th birthday.
Inspired by the impact of Josh’s wish experience and humbled by the Beach Ball supporters who helped make it happen, the Cramer family plans to remain involved with the Beach Ball event.
“We were able to witness firsthand the joy of a wish come true,” shared Michele. “To be able to do the same for another family is extremely rewarding.”
