MAKE-A-WISH® NEW JERSEY HOSTS “JERSEY MIKE’S SUBS DAY OF GRATITUDE”

Date

May 15, 2017

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ

Make-A-Wish® New Jersey and 52 Jersey Mike’s Subs locations in North and Central New Jersey joined forces this March during the 7th Annual Jersey Mike’s Subs “Month of Giving”. The month-long campaign raised $263,749 for Make-A-Wish New Jersey, whose mission is to grant the wishes of local children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Additional funds were raised for other Make-A-Wish chapters at 95 Jersey Mike’s locations around the country, resulting in a $434,610 contribution to Make-A-Wish nationwide. Jersey Mike’s Subs raised a record-breaking $5.5 million, supporting nearly 150 charities during the annual Month of Giving campaign.

On Thursday, May 11th, at their whimsical wish-granting facility, the Samuel & Josephine Plumeri Wishing Place, Make-A-Wish New Jersey hosted corporate leaders from Jersey Mike’s Subs as well as franchise owners from across the state for a day of thanks. The program was filled with campaign highlights and inspirational words of gratitude, and concluded with tours of the Make-A-Wish castle. The celebration painted a picture for guests of how a child’s wish turns into a reality and the significant role the wish experience plays in the healing process.

Make-A-Wish New Jersey President & Chief Executive Officer Tom Weatherall delivered a heartfelt speech to Jersey Mike’s Subs guests, thanking them for making over 25 New Jersey wish kids’ dreams come true with their contribution. Mr. Weatherall shared what a wish can mean to a family, the impact a wish has on the medical journey eligible children go through, and closed with reading a letter of thanks from a wish family.

“What we find to be the most compelling aspect of our great partnership with Jersey Mike’s is that our wish kids live in the same communities that Jersey Mike’s serves,” Mr. Weatherall shared with the audience. “And we know that each of you, your staff and your patrons, care about that. For as strong as our brand is, we rely 100% on the benevolence of the community. Our friends at Jersey Mike’s Subs have shown us that they are there for their community, and we cannot thank you enough.”

Some of the wish children whose wishes were granted with the funds raised by Jersey Mike’s Subs were present to give thanks for making their wishes come true. Giovanna Onorato, the mother of 15-year-old wish kid Diogo of Marlboro, New Jersey, shared her son’s wish experience including the positive impact it had as part of his treatment protocol with the attendees as well. Diogo’s wish was to meet his heroes “The Faze” – a famous YouTube gaming group.

“It’s not just the trip. It’s not just the end result. It’s the entire experience,” Giovanna shared.

“Now in our fourth decade in New Jersey, we have long known that a wish experience is nothing short of life-changing for a child with a life-threatening medical condition,” Tom Weatherall, President & Chief Executive Officer, continued.  “We pick up where science and medicine leave off, and can be just as important as their treatment protocols.  We’ve witnessed  - thousands upon thousands of times - the hope, strength and joy a wish gives a child, and the difference it can make in their lives and their family’s lives. Your entire team at Jersey Mike’s Subs, and your loyal patrons, have shown us that you, too, believe in the power of a wish.”

Make-A-Wish New Jersey has granted over 9,000 wishes in its 34-year-history – 483 last year alone. With a goal of granting well over 500 wishes this year, the generous support of corporations like Jersey Mike’s is critical to the organization’s continued success.
