Make-A-Wish New Jersey Celebrates 35 YearsMake-A-Wish New Jersey Celebrates 35 Years

35 Years of Wishes

Since 1983, over 10,000 wishes have been granted to children with critical illnesses in the Garden State. As we look back on how far we’ve come, we’ll feature a series of wish kids – both recent and from decades ago – sharing what their wish meant to them and their families.

Kathy's wish to have a computer

wish granted, 1997
genetic disorder

“I was 10 or 11 when I was diagnosed with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. At first I was heartbroken, I didn’t really know much of what was going on. September 19th of 1997 was my wish. I wanted something that I was going to be able to do, something that would last longer than just a day or a week. I wanted something to appreciate for the long term. I knew being a person with a disability, that physical things weren’t going to be something I could participate in every day. By getting a computer, a scanner, a printer and whole bunch of video games, it opened up doors for me, and showed that I can still do things. I began my career as a 911 dispatcher in September of 2007 - all because one day, because of Make-A-Wish, I learned to type upside down.

Now that I’m Miss Wheelchair New Jersey 2018, I would like to work with Make-A-Wish and give back to them. I think it’s important even as a younger adult to hear “Yes”. As a kid, the last thing you want to hear is “No”. Make-A-Wish gives you that “Yes”."

Chris' wish to go on a crusie with the Olsen Twins

wish granted, 2001
cystic fibrosis

"My name is Chris Love. My wish was granted by Make-A-Wish New Jersey in 2001 when I was 10 years old. My wish was to go on a cruise with the Olsen Twins, I had a major crush on them back then. My wish was important to me because it was something that involved my entire family and gave us an escape from the day-to-day issues pertaining to cystic fibrosis, the disease that both myself and my older brother have. Now as a Wish Alum, I give back to Make-A-Wish through filming events, wish reveals, and wish stories. I also ran in the 1st Urban Mudder obstacle course race with other Make-A-Wish family members and volunteers. The reason I want to give back is because Make-A-Wish provided me with an experience that my family and I will never forget and I want to help do the same for any and all kids who need and deserve it."

Christine's wish to go to Walt Disney World® Resort

wish granted, 1995
respiratory disorder

"Twenty-three years ago, when I was 8 years old, I received my wish and went to Walt Disney World Resort with my family. It was a dream come true and, with my medical needs, it would not have happened without Make-A-Wish. Make-A-Wish is still a part of my life in many ways. My family and friends participate in the Walk & Roll For Wishes every year and I make and sell bracelets for this awesome cause. Through this great organization’s social media I have become acquainted with many wonderful people. It is always a treat to meet these friends at events at the Samuel & Josephine Plumeri Wishing Place. Thank you Make-A-Wish for having such a positive impact on me and my family."

Kerri's Wish to Go to Hawaii

wish granted, 2012
non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

"I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in November of 2010. I was 17 and in my senior year of high school. My parents and sisters were the reason I was able to receive the best care I did, and so I wanted a wish that would incorporate all of us. My wish was a trip to Hawaii and to swim with dolphins while we were there. I had always wanted to travel to Hawaii because of my love for warm weather and the beach. I felt this was the perfect wish that not only me, but my family would enjoy after the long months of treatments I endured. We had an amazing time and it meant the world to us. The Make-A-Wish team who came to our home to sit down and plan the wish with us were true angels. It was an amazing experience and we are forever grateful we were able to be apart of this!"

My parents are now wish granting volunteers because they knew how looking forward to this trip was a main component to our healing process. ”
